Broadchurch Episode Five

I seem to be the only person of the opinion that this was the worst episode yet. All the same it just didn’t seem revolutionary. There were no ‘big reveals’ in the plot that weren’t predictable, and the episode just didn’t seem to have any kind of spectacular aura to it like the others. It was clear that Jack (David Bradley) was not the killer despite the over-deliberate red herrings. On the other hand most of the suspects seem to know something essential. Paul Coates (Arthur Darvill) is definitely hiding something, that through Darvill’s excellent acting could turn out to be anything. The person that really needs interrogating however is Tom Miller (Adam Wilson) who definitely holds an essential puzzle piece, potentially the knowledge of who the killer is. Maybe it is even possible that he himself is the killer. It also seems a little too obvious that Susan Wright (Pauline Quirke)’s invitation to Tom to take the dog for a walkwas the way she lured Danny, though I suppose some plot points will have to be obvious. I do seem to be looking into things too much, for instance i thought for the majority of the episode that Jack’s story about his son’s death was a lie, and I was wrong there. Nonetheless the scene in the casino was by far the most intriguing scene of the episode. I am also sure that Ellie (Olivia Colman)’s sister, Lucy Stevens (Tanya Franks) will play a big role in the plot from henceforth. Finally, the distinct lack of Steve (Will Mellor) was interesting, particularly due to my considering of his suicide. it appears very unlikely that either he or Mark Latimer (Andrew Buchan) will commit now, as two suicides in one series is just not how television works, let’s face it. Maybe the next episode’s plot will live up to the consistently brilliant acting and direction.
